understood in terms of the political dynamics behind it. The focus of the paper will be Edendale, the second largest township in PMB. This paper will look into the following aspects. Firstly, a social and economic profile of the PMB townships, with particular emphasis on Edendale, including some administrative aspects of these townships. Secondly, an attempt will be made to explain the social and political interests battling for the control of Edendale. Thirdly, the basis of Inkatha's attempts at establishing its hegemony in PMB townships will be analysed. Lastly, the paper will conclude by drawing some lessons for the struggle against Inkatha in Natal
