In 1961 the author published (Geogrl J. 127, 2) bathymetrical maps of four of the larger lakes in Snowdonia. Together with the six which are now added they include almost all the water bodies in the district which are large enough to be considered lakes rather than tarns. Measurements of depth were made with a hand lead-line at intervals of thirty yards along straight lines crossing the lakes. Contours have been interpolated. These six lakes include both the shallo west and the deepest in Wales. In Llyn Ogwen no depth greater than nine feet was found. In Llyn Cowlyd the maximum depth was 229 ft. This is about 45 ft greater than its natural depth, the water surface having been raised twice by the building of dams
