For over ioo years David Livingstone has been-regarded as a hero. Recent studies have revealed his more human qualities and failings. This paper examines his contribution as a geographer and field scientist in a period when amateurism was still respectable but when the uneasy relationship between science and religion was giving way to the professionalism and selfassurance of field sciences following Darwin. Evidence is examined to support the argument that Livingstone's main preoccupation with African advance? ment through commerce and Christianity made him a myopic observer and recorder of human activity and of the economic potential of areas through which he passed. It is suggested that Livingstone was typical of the age in which he lived in that he tended to disregard scientific evidence when it contradicted his aims and grand designs. It is only as an observer of wild life and physical phenomena in which his ideals and emotions were not directly engaged that we see his true worth as a field scientist
