As A basis for coastal study and for the classification of coasts Valentin x has Ldistingu hed primari y betwee advancing and retreating coasts, a distinction which becomes in practice separation of those showing evidence of recent advance and recent retreat, or of gain and loss of land. The object of these notes is to introduce some illustrations of coastal features, which are briefly described and are classified as nearly as possible according to Valentin's scheme. The acid test for a new theory is confrontation with practical cases and specific examples which it must be capable of explaining. The coasts of New Zealand have furnished all the examples cited
