Flood Hazard Management in Britain

Flood hazard management in Britain is changing. This reflects the changing political economy in Britain towards the end of the 1980s, which has brought greater emphasis on lessening the role of the public sector. The results are increased attention to the worthwhileness of government investment in flood alleviation, greater environmental awareness, and shifting institutional arrangements. The latter reflects the reduced influence of farming and landowning interests, and the moves towards a privatized water industry scrutinized by a regulatory National Rivers Authority. One result of current trends is that this increasingly interdiscipli? nary field now offers more scope for geographical research, to complement the traditional emphasis on engineering and hydrology
