The paper describes briefly three rural development surveys in Southern Darfur in the Republic of Sudan. The surveys covered a total of 120 000 km2 over a period extending from late 1971 to the end of 1977. Experience gained on one survey was used in later surveys as a result of continuity of personnel, enabling considerable time savings to be achieved. The evolution of survey methodology and the use of satellite imagery and low-level aerial surveys also enabled time to be saved while improving the quality and quantity of data collected and used
