To reduce earthquake losses in regions of little-known seismicity it is necessary to determine in advance what is an acceptable risk. To do this a critical evaluation of all existing seismological, tectonic and historical data should be made and should include confirmation by field study of the epicentral regions of the larger earthquakes. To demonstrate the effectiveness of such a multi-disciplinary approach for the assessment of earthquake risk we have taken as an exam? ple the fast-developing area of Isfahan and its adjacent district of Chahar Mahal, a region of little-known seismicity. This study shows that, contrary to what has been written in recent times, the city of Isfahan was never destroyed by earth? quakes and the adjacent district of Chahar Mahal is more seismically active than was believed to be the case
