A century ago Verney Lovett Cameron completed one of the greatest feats in the annals of African exploration when he crossed the heart of the continent from east to west. As a result of this expedition Cameron became generally recognized as a leading authority on Africa, and for the remainder of his life he was intimately connected with geographical and other developments relating to the continent. Yet for all his achievements he has largely been ignored by posterity. This article attempts to restore a small measure of deserved fame and recognition to Cameron by focusing on his journey across Africa in the broader context of his life as a whole
