IN recent years both economic and military interests have stimulated the investi? gation of the oceanography of the coastal waters, usually in the form of detailed surveys of limited areas. It was to bring together some of these data and also to emphasize the value of the geographic approach in oceanography that the authors undertook this study. It is not the object of this paper to enumerate all the various physical, chemical, biological, geological and meteorological elements that constitute marine environments and it is sufficient to point out that in general all of them have their greatest spatial and time variability in the coastal waters. It is therefore important to identify some of the major aspects of the regional variability and, if possible, to determine the causes. Equally important are the nature and magnitude of the seasonal variations because these are significant in marine en? vironments
