Music therapy for severely sick children

Background: The aim of the study was to explore whether music therapy is a suitable therapy form for children and adolescents after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).Methods: A randomized clinic study, 24 patients 0–16 years undergoing HSCT were included. Physiological parameters were evaluated and international valid instruments were used, including PedsQL 4 and WHO5. During hospitalization, music therapy was performed twice a week in the treatment group compared to standard care. The control group received music therapy after being discharged.Results: The music therapy group had significantly reduced evening heart rates compared to the control group. At attendance for the conference, preliminary results concerning psychological measurements will be available.Conclusion: Our study shows that music therapy can lower the heart rate of children undergoing severe medical treatment, indicating that the child will be less distressed
