Le mirage des classifications naturelles. Remarques critiques sur un totem, d'Aristote à l'anthropologie contemporaine

Quel usage peut-on faire de la taxinomie moderne pour l'étude des classifications « non scientifiques» ? Et que nous apprend, en retour, l'usage et la fonction de ces classifications en contexte ? La taxinomie moderne semble fournir un cadre classificatoire systématique et efficace pour identifier et inventorier les espèces, et structurer rationnellement le monde animal. Elle fournirait à ce titre un repère robuste aux chercheurs en sciences humaines pour évaluer la pertinence et l'acuité des classements populaires ou des classifications d'autres cultures. C'est l'illusion que porte cette conception que nous voulons critiquer, en montrant les difficultés épistémologiques et le formalisme abstrait et artificiel des classifications modernes. Nous considérons successivement le fondement et l'usage de la classification, la fonction méthodologique des classes, puis le statut ontologique du concept d'espèce, à partir du cadre aristotélicien qui nous permettra de mettre en regard la situation contemporaine. En insistant sur la plasticité des productions antiques et la fonction épistémologique qui les motivent, ainsi que sur les insuffisances de la taxinomie savante contemporaines, nous montrons comme certaines enquêtes d'ethnoscience et de psychologie cognitive encouragent à réviser, aussi bien pour les études particulières portant sur des sociétés anciennes que pour les sociétés contemporaines, ce fétiche classificatoire
