It is, of course, the cinema, and particularly its prototypes the phenakistoscope, most notablywhich were referred to as toys both philosophical and scientific. These terms, their conjunction, are the product of an era in which science and its technological applications could still be identified with philosophy, and the scientist held to be the natural philosopher. For an early and significant text, for the locus classicus on the scientific toy, I turn, therefore, to Baudelaire's La morale dujoujoux (The Ethic of the Toy), written in 1859
