Tocharian was one of those branches of Proto-Indo-European that retained paradigmatic ablaut as a productive morphological process in its verbal system. Regular phonological changes, particularly affecting the weak grades of TeuT and TeiT roots (Proto-Tocharian *d from *u and *jL from *i), however threatened the otherwise regular and systematic correspondences between the ablaut grades. Proto-Tocharian speakers obviated this difficulty by creating new, morphological, zero-grades *du and *di in productive morphological situations. The Proto-Tocharian vowel system in general and the ablaut system in particular weie also affected by various umlaut phenomena, particularly by a-umlaut (reformulated here on the basis of earlier discussions)
