The object is an object through and through, and consciousness is consciousness through and through. There are two and only two meanings for the term exist: one exists as thing or as consciousness. But the experience of the body proper, quite to the contrary, is the revelation of an ambiguous mode of'existence. If I attempt to think of it as a cluster of processes in the third person vision, motricity, sexuality I am immediately aware that these functions cannot be interrelated among themselves nor related to the surrounding world by any notion of causality; they are inextricably entangled in a very unique drama. Therefore thie body is not an object (M. Merleau-Ponty, 1967: 231)
