There currently exist about fifty higher education programmes and institutions oriented to serve indigenous and Afro-descendant individuals and/or communities in Latin America. This whole of initiatives shows a striking diversity which responds to several factors, e.g., social agents that promote and/or manage them (universities, governmental and international cooperation agencies, religious organizations, private foundations, and/or indigenous and Afro-descendant intellectuals and organizations, among others), cultural differences among involved population groups, as well as, national societies’ histories, States, institutional frameworks and educational systems. The development of higher education policies and programmes requests properly appraising such a complex diversity. This article seeks to contribute to that end by discussing some specific features and contributions of three universities in the Andean region of South America that have been created by indigenous peoples’ intellectuals and organizations. This analysis, jointly with an exploratory survey responded by seventy key informants from 12 Latin American countries, allows us to identify some significant differences between diverse agents’ conceptions and usages of the idea of “interculturality”, which plays an important role in orienting their practices in this field
