This paper attempts to project the growth of urbanization in India and to assess the economic implications of this growth. The relatively smooth and steady growth of urbanization in India since the turn of the century is recorded including the evolving size distribution of cities. The regional differences in urbanization observed over the last three decades are explained in terms of the variation in economic development in the different states of the country. An accounting is made of the urban/rural distribution of income. It is found that there has been a vast structural change in the economy with the share of agricultural production having declined from about 60 percent to about 37 percent of GNP over the past 35 years, but unaccompanied by corresponding changes in employment structure. This has resulted in a continuing increase in the ratio of urban to rural per capita incomes--an increase from about 1.8 in 1950 to about 2.8 now. The paper then makes plausible projections of population, urbanization, income and employment up to the year 2001. The changing structure of the economy that is projected in this paper poses special challenges to the management of the economy in terms of the rapid process of urbanization and the infrastructure investments implied
