Photograph: The Lynching Lucille Clifton (bio) Lucille Clifton: A Special Section is it the cut glass of their eyes looking up toward the new gnarled branch of a black man hanging from a tree? is it the white milk pleated collar of a woman smiling toward the camera her fingers loose around a christian cross drooping against her breast? or is it all of us captured, gathered by history into an accurate album? will we be required to view it together under the all recording sky? Lucille Clifton Lucille Clifton, who has won many prizes for her work, is author of thirty-two books of poetry for adults and prose for young readers. She is the only poet with two books as finalist for the Pulitzer Prize during the same year. She is currently Distinguished Professor of Humanities at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She has also served as Blackburn Professor of Creative Writing at Duke University and as Poet Laureate of Maryland. Copyright © 1999 Charles H. Rowell
