L'histoire de la geologie appliquee est ici presentee. L'auteur tente d'expliquer la valeur et l'interet de cette discipline autant que ses origines. Il demontre de quelle maniere certaines donnees economiques ont contribue a developper la science geologique au 19e siecle et au debut du 20e siecle. En presentant la geologie appliquee, ses institutions, pratiques, problemes et theories, l'auteur suggere une histoire differente de la geologie, celle qui integre l'etude technique des mines et des exploitations minieres combinee a des theories sur la terre. Pour les historiens en science et technologie, cet article situe la geologie appliquee au centre des recherches scientifiques entre science, technologie et industrie
