The archaic period in Greece was a time when local building styles were in evidence; thus, they make it possible to distinguish regional characteristics in architecture and architectural sculpture. A study of archaic akroteria can be undertaken in this context. Not only are different types of akroteria preferred in the major areas of Greece, but the times of adoption of the types vary also. Greeks, as well as the non-Greek populations of Asia Minor and Italy, may have played a part in the initial use of this form of architectural decoration.
