The Beaux' Stratagem remains one of the most accessible of Restoration comedies and is produced with some regularity by academic theatres; it is even attempted occasionally in the commercial theatre.' Directors find it an effective stage vehicle. Literary critics, however, have been able to come to little agreement the play. Is it sentimental slush? A serious comment on bad marriage and England's divorce laws? Is it about attitudes toward money? marriage? something else? Literary critics have emphasized some aspects of the play not usually apparent in production and other aspects difficult or impossible to communicate in the theatre
