Si la notion d'accident n'appartient pas à l'appareillage freudien, ce dernier n'en vient pas moins bouleverser profondément la compréhension que le sujet s'en fait : en découvrant l'existence d'un déterminisme psychique inconscient associé à l'impérieux besoin de causalité qui anime tout sujet, c'est le statut même de l'accidentel qui se voit remanié, posant alors de manière nouvelle le problème de la causalité
