The volumes under review focus on the concluding period of Franklin D. Roosevelt's life. Joseph Lelyveld's His Final Battle deals with FDR's struggle with his declining health during the last sixteen months of his life. David B. Woolner's The Last 100 Days details FDR's personal and political life on each of the last hundred days. Both volumes widen their time frames to provide historical context for the issues with which Roosevelt grappled and give readers new insights into a complex figure. Lelyveld cites Roosevelt's description of himself as a “juggler” and argues that the balls in motion were military, policy, political options, and, especially, the personal trauma of his failing health (p. 15). Should he run for reelection or retire to his home in Hyde Park? Should he resign and move to a new career as head of the soon-to-be-born United Nations (UN) or begin a new project of making the Saudi Arabian desert bloom
