The moving of sugarcane production into the Brazilian State of Goias was not a simple process. The natural conditions in the largest part of the State, where prevails an extended period without rain and infertile soils, was restrictive to this crop. For a long time, Gois was seen as inappropriate for a dynamic growth of sugarcane agroindustry. Nevertheless, the situation has changed as a response to the increase in ethanol demand induced by the rising of Brazilian fleet of flex-fuel vehicles. After that, Gois became the second largest national producer of ethanol and sugarcane. This change was only possible because of the learning process that allowed the improvement of techniques to produce sugarcane in the conditions of cerrados. The aim of this paper is to analyze the efforts made in this direction focusing on the role of three sugarcane research centers: IAC, CTC, and Ridesa
