THE geographical study of land utilization in Sudan has received the attention of a number of scholars in recent years, and one in particular, J. H. G. Lebon, has produced an excellent monograph1 dealing with land use in all of the country. Other scholars have examined the conditions of a particular village or group of villages in great detail with some excellent results.2 Little has been done, however, at the scale between the detailed investigations of those who have studied individual villages, and Lebon's study, in which detailed mapping was impossible considering that he was examining a country almost one million square miles in size. 1J. H. G. Lebon: Land Use in Sudan (The World Land Use Survey, Monograph No. 4; Bude, Cornwall, 1965). See also his earlier article, Land Use Mapping in Sudan, Econ. Geog., Vol. 35, 1959, pp. 60-70. 2 For example, see K. M. Barbour: The Wadi Azum from Zalingei to Murnei, Sudan Notes and Records, Vol. 31, 1950, pp. 105-124; and John R. Randell: El Gedid-A Blue Nile Gezira Village, Sudan Notes and Records, Vol. 39, 1958, pp. 25-39. Other works dealing with agriculture in Sudan include the now out-of-print J. D. Tothill, ed.: Agriculture in the Sudan (London, 1948) which remains a standard reference in many respects despite its age; K. M. Barbour: The Republic of the Sudan: A Regional Geography (London, 1961); D. J. Shaw, ed.: Agricultural Development in the Sudan, Proceedings of the 13th Annual Conference of the Philosophical Society of the Sudan (Khartoum, 1966). There is a need, then, for studies between these two scales that are more detailed than Lebon's, but cover major areas of the country. This paper deals with conditions of land utilization in a
