Bien que la culture hindoue et la culture musulmane possedent leurs caracteristiques propres, elles presentent des structures sous-jacentes de medievalisme identiques. L'A. etudie dans la culture indienne medievale d'une part les relations qui existent entre le brahmane (vertu religieuse et sociale, dieu parmi les hommes, lie au dharma et au kama) et le « sannyasi » (vertu et pouvoir religieux mais asocial, homme parmi les dieux, lie au moksha), le brahmane et le roi (pouvoir social mais areligieux, lie a l'artha et au kama), le « sannyasi » et le roi, et d'autre part les relations liant la shari'at (vertu religieuse et sociale, homme de Dieu, Ulema) et l'hukumat (pouvoir social mais areligieux, fils de Mahmud, sultan), la shari'at et le tariqat (vertu et pouvoir religieux mais asocial, homme en Dieu, soufi), le tariqat et l'hukumat d'autre part
