Increasing ecological problems in agriculture are encouraging policy-makers to develop plans to reduce and control the pollution caused by current intensive farming practices. To construct measures that are both effective from the ecological point of view and acceptable at the farm level, information is required on the ecological-economic interaction. The paper concerns the purposes and requirements of farm economic models incorporating residuals discharge, i.e. the emission of nutrients (especially nitrogen) and biocides. The issues discussed are: selection of an appropriate economic modelling technique; selection of ecological (emission) models and the coupling of ecological and economic models; organization of the research in phases; and application of the environmental-economic model to assess the implications of a levy system on pesticide use. -from Authors
