A fertility and family planning survey was undertaken in Greater Bombay India by means of a representative sampling technique in 1966. Aims of the survey were: 1) estimation of the levels and patterns of fertility of currently married women in the area; 2) estimation of the relationship of selected socioeconomic factors to fertility levels; and 3) assessment of the social norms regarding age at marriage family size and child spacing. The educational attainment of husband or wife was closely related to fertility. Even differentials according to other factors were influenced by educational differences. Fertility was also related inversely to the age at marriage for the women. Not only was there a clearcut pattern of differential fertility in the Bombay area but there was lower average fertility in Bombay than in the rest of the country indicating the possible initiation of a fertility transition. Knowledge of family planning was fairly widespread and attitudes were favorable. The pattern of transmission of knowledge differed with the different methods. Some representative acceptor figures for the area are presented in tabular form
