The aim of this study is to analyse the novel O Selvagem da pera (1994), written by Rubem Fonseca. We take into account the representation of the idea of cultural hybridity by the character of Carlos Gomes, conductor who won international renown as the author of the opera "O Guarani", but, at the same time, suffered severe discrimination for being a Brazilian and a mestizo artist. The novel shows the setbacks of his career, due to prejudice against his nationality and ethnical origin. By analysing cultural hybridity of Carlos Gomes, we aim at highlighting the criticism towards the Brazilian ideal of racial democracy and the European ethnocentrism shown in this novel
