Levinson's concept of the mentor relationship, the developmental function of which is to support the realization of a young man's Dream of the kind of life he would like to lead as an adult, is discussed with reference to Rex Mortimer (1926-1979) and Willy Brandt (1913- ), two political figures for whom such relationships were significant. The different mentor relationships experienced by these two men are compared and then explained by reference to their childhood antecedents. It is concluded that a young man of pressing self-esteem needs is likely to choose an overbearing mentor who, far from facilitating the realization of his Dream, may seek to control him by making him over in his own image
