Against the backdrop of events in China and Japan, American foreign relations and domestic events, and developments in Colorado, William Wei has written a well-researched study of the Chinese and Japanese experiences in Colorado. Based upon local, regional, and national newspapers, government documents, archival materials, and recent novels and films, Asians in Colorado traces the reasons for Asian migration to Colorado, anti-Asian prejudice, Asian encounters and reactions to discrimination and racism, and Asian perseverance and life-styles. He highlights individuals, both Asian and non-Asian, who have shaped events. Their presence, beginning with the Chinese in 1869 and the Japanese in 1900, coincided with the rise of the labor unions with their anti-Asian stance. The resulting violence was exemplified in the 1880 Denver race riot against the Chinese (detailed from a different perspective in Liping Zhu's The Road to Chinese Exclusion: The Denver Riot, 1880 Election, and the Rise of the West [2013]) and the Japanese massacre in the Ludlow region in 1913–1914
