Bakhtin's writings are at center of two interrelated or perhaps parallel and still unsettled issues: relation of individual ego to intersubjectivity and connection between thought and language. At very heart of both these issues for Bakhtin is language itself, which makes intersubjectivity inescapable and all-pervasive basis of all human existence. The question arises whether this fact precludes individual's experience of himself apart from intersubjectivity. Can a person communicate experience of himself to himself apart from structures of interpersonal discourse? Or perhaps of greater relevance to Bakhtinian framework, how can a person's unique experience of himself be adequately communicated to others?l Within this context, problem of relationship between individual and society becomes problem of possibility of historical knowledge itself. At intersection of all these questions stands psychoanalysis, which, after all, proposes its own model for intrapersonal communication and intersubjectivity. Indeed, these questions were first put to psychoanalysis in Russia at about same time that Freud's writings were being interrogated in Germany by founders of Critical Theory (Held 1980:111-147; Miller 1985:635; see also Kovel 1976). In both cases, a cardinal point for their examination was Marx's assertion in his Theses on Feuerbach that the human essence is no ab
