East of Myra (modern Demre) in Lycia, close to the present-day village of Yukari Beymelek, stand the imposing ruins of a Hellenistic fort consisting of two four-storeyed towers and connecting curtains. It has not been excavated. Only one ancient source contains a clue to the identification of the site: in the Stadiasmus Maris Magni mention is made of "a tower called the Ision" between Andriake and the Limyrus River. The fort by Beymelek was probably built between 250 and 200 B. C. to protect the neighborhood and the Myros delta against small-scale incursions
