Excerpt: "Composed primarily by leading members of the émigré community of the 1930s and 1940s, the writings of the first generation of Social Research: An International Quarterly of the Political and Social Sciences demand special attention as we mark this publication's eight decades of sustained and rigorous reflection. Though they wrote under pressure, unlike the luminous list inventoried by Strauss they had no need, once in New York, to hide their opinions at just the moment that "in a considerable number of countries," as he limpidly observed, "freedom is now suppressed and replaced by a compulsion to coordinate speech with such views as the government believes to be expedient" (Strauss 1941, 488). Ideas that would have had to remain between the lines in Germany, Italy, and the Soviet Union could be declared openly, if wistfully, in the journal's pages."
