A survey of academic staff training in 42 universities and 25 colleges in the United Kingdom is reported and discussed. The results indicate that most training continues to be focused upon teaching skills but there is a growing recognition of the importance of training for all staff in research and management as well as teaching. There appears to be sufficient expertise and resources to provide training on most topics but various constraints on training activities are reported. The respondents provided a set of suggestions for enhancing training. These included greater institutional or departmental recognition and the provision of courses that are relevant, practical and enjoyable
