The archive of Harriet Strong (1844-1926) provides an extraordinary and representative narrative. Harriet Strong devoted 20 years to marriage, suffering a severe nervous disorder until age 40, when her husband committed suicide. She then became a celebrated entrepreneur. Her archive tells this story, but it resists being read as the record of an inner life. The papers of Harriet Strong suggest approaches to the life writings of publicly minded American careerwomen
