It is argued that Sparta did not have a true prytaneion in the sense used by S. Miller in The Prytaneion: Its Form and Function. On the basis of literary and epigraphical evidence it is instead proposed that the building Pausanias called the old Ephoreia functioned as Sparta's prytaneion and fitted many of the criteria Miller established for prytaneia in other cities
