In Literature as History Mario T. García explores the archival and history-telling potential of literary works, including autobiography, testimonios, and novels. García may be placed in a long line of scholars who have worked to bridge these disciplinary fields. In Chicana/o studies this effort to deeply consider the relationship between history and literature has often been taken up by scholars with literary or interdisciplinary training. García brings to the conversation a historian's disciplinary perspective, an appreciation for interdisciplinary growth, and an understanding that history can be told and learned from a variety of sources. Treating literary texts as an archive, García offers two main approaches: First, he examines how each text tells Chicana/o history in line with current scholarship and how some texts may offer new routes of inquiry for scholars. Second, García illustrates how literary works do not simply strive for historical accuracy but also seek to achieve an emotionally complex truth that can reach readers and students in a different but complementary way to disciplinary histories
