He has taught at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and at Duke University and University of Wisconsin in the United States. He is the author of Interpretación y diferencia (1991), Tercer espacio: Duelo y literatura en América Latina (1999), The Exhaustion of Difference: The Politics of Latin American Cultural Studies (2001), and Línea de sombra: El no sujeto de lo político. He is a coeditor of Res publica, Política común, and Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies.
