exalted. The present era is preoccupied almost to a fault with methodology and basic principles in the study of literature. Earlier assumptions about the history and the forms of literature are now called into question by a radical reconsideration of all critical concepts. Among these concepts metaphor assumes a prominent place, both because it is central to literary language and poetic structure in several ways (as the essays in this issue indicate) and because the term itself has a complex history within the field of literary criticism and theory (as demonstrated by the forthcoming book on metaphor by Paul Ricoeur'). Yet all theory is dependent, it seems to me, on historical conditions, and every critical concept emerges from a process of historical development.
