A partir de la description de son experience ethnographique a Kuranda dans le Nord du Queensland (Australie), l'A. tente de problematiser la localisation du travail ethnographique en reference non plus a une determination geographique mais sociale du site ethnographique. Relatant notamment la maniere dont elle a procede au choix de son terrain et le contexte d'une relation personnelle continue avec celui-ci, elle soutient que la delimitation d'un lieu de recherche, la fixation de frontieres a un terrain, a partir d'oppositions telles que le local et le global, la recherche centree ou multi-situee, ou a partir de la delimitation d'une culture ou d'une societe, suppose l'examen prealable de ces categories en tant que concepts. Selon l'A. le terrain ethnographique n'est pas un site geographique preexistant, ni une entite sociale et/ou culturelle objective et delimitee, mais un champ social non delimite. Faire du terrain pour l'ethnologue consiste alors a se placer dans un terrain de socialite afin de generer une comprehension des situations sociales, et des processus qui fixent un espace, une culture, une societe, ou une communaute en tant que systeme objectif
