The purpose of this report is to present the results of a study of the requirements for secondary teacher certification in the 50 states. The report will focus upon comparing minimum standards in the 50 states with the guidelines and standards set forth by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) and by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).More specifically, the study will report the status of minimum certification standards for the 50 states with regard to general education and professional education requirements.Method A questionnaire was mailed to officials in the De- partment of Education in each state, resulting in 45 responses. When information was incomplete or con- fusing, clarification was obtained by follow-up tele- phone calls to state certification officials. For the re- maining five states it was necessary to secure infor- mation entirely by telephone interviews
