This paper is a brief examination of the development of an iconographic type: the reclining river-god. It is in two sections. The first discusses the date of the creation of this type, and, as an important corollary to that dating, rejects the identifications of the "river-gods" of the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia and the West Pediment of the Parthenon. The second considers the possible sources for the type and focuses on the relationship between river-gods and reclining banqueting figures, particularly the reclining Herakles type
