The debate between Georg Luktcs and the Frankfurt School after World War II did not occur in a climate of mutual understanding. Even before they left Germany in 1933 LukAcs emigrating to the Soviet Union and the members of the Frankfurt School mostly to the United States there were theoretical differences and disagreements on major political issues; after 1945, especially after the political division of Germany, there was even less of a basis for fruitful discussion. While Lukics became the most influential spokesman of orthodox Marxism in Hungary and East Germany (whether this role was an appropriate one is another matter), the members of the Frankfurt School, particularly Horkheimer and Adorno, moved far away from the Marxist premises of their early work, no longer sharing many assumptions with the Hungarian critic.
