Embattled River

For centuries, the Hudson River has been a key corridor of movement into the North American interior as well as a waterway that has captured the nation's imagination. The scenic landscapes of the Hudson gave birth to a school of painting, and its towns and shoreline formed the backdrop for great American literature. But at the same time, its waters began to be used and abused by nearby growing cities and industries that multiplied along its banks. By the late twentieth century, as David Schuyler's important new book argues, the river became a national symbol of environmental crisis and a key crucible for the nation's blossoming environmental movement. In this carefully researched narrative, Schuyler explores the key events in the river's recent history as well as the principal agents and organizations that worked to save the river and that offered a model of activism and policy making that shaped the nation's response to its growing environmental challenges.
