During the twentieth century, sweeping urbanization transformed the globe. In New World Cities seven historians examine this extraordinary phenomenon in case studies of six Western Hemisphere metropolises. Joining the growing ranks of transnational studies, this volume admirably attempts to free itself from the traditional nation-focused vision of historians and instead adopts a hemispheric perspective. The problems and characteristics of mega-metropolises are not simply national phenomena; they are hemispheric and, more significantly, global issues. John Tutino authors the volume's first case study, which examines the development of Mexico City from 1870 to 2000. Like his fellow contributors, Tutino stresses the breakneck pace of urbanization in the twentieth century; the population of the Mexican metropolis soared from five hundred thousand in 1900 to 18,400,000 a century later.
