The aim of this article is to contribute to a more refined understanding of the inner logic of ‘Afrikanerdom’ and its usage of ethnicity during the latter half of the twentieth century. Instead of following the customary road of approaching the subject matter ‘from the outside’ only, an analysis is here done also ‘from within’. Both methods are applied to a key metaphor which was consistently used throughout the past five decades in Afrikaner elite discourse. This is accessed through one of the fundamental — yet from a scholarly point of view neglected — forms of expression of Afrikaner discourse: Afrikaner theology and religion. Such an approach allows one entry into the intimacy of Afrikaner self‐conceptions, as opposed to public posturing, and leads to a picture of a far less self assured and far less principled Afrikaner than popular scholarship and media folklore has painted
