The system of text numbering adopted here for the Ugaritic tablets is that of Richard E. Whitaker, A Concordance of the Ugaritic Literature (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1972). Only lines 10-18 of this text are being studied because lines 1-9 deal with a completely different subject. 1 The first reference to this text seems to have been made by C. Virolleaud in 1955: Les nouvelles tablettes alphab6tiques de Ras Shamra (XVIIIe campagne, automne 1954), CRAI 1955, p. 77; see also, by the same author, Questions de vocabulaire ougaritique, GLECS 8 (1957-60): 27. The following studies of or allusions to text 2106 will be referred to throughout this paper by the author's name only:-C. Virolleaud, Le Palais royal d'Ugarit V, Mission de Ras Shamra, vol. 11 (Paris: Imprimerie Nationale and Librairie C. Klincksieck, 1965), pp. 129-30.-O. Eissfeldt, Neue keilalphabetische Texte aus Ras Schamra-Ugarit, Sitzungsberichte der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, Klasse fir Sprachen, Literature und Kunst, 1965/6, p. 35.-Jack M.
