T I HE first person in the United States to hold a professorship devoted, nominally at least, to geography unlinked with any other subject' was probably the man who served as professor of physical and political geography in the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale from 1863 to 1872-Daniel Coit Gilman. This fact alone is sufficient reason why he should arouse the curiosity of an American geographer a hundred years later. Gilman, however, has other claims on our attention. Of three American university presidents of the middle and late nineteenth century who were profoundly interested in history and geography,2 Gilman was the most active as a geographer and did the most for the later advancement of geographical scholarship
