The creation of prankish wine containers in Boeotia during the sixth and fifth centuries B. C. is studied with emphasis on shape, function, internal construction, and external decoration. Painted with various techniques, the trick vases as a whole demonstrate a development in construction toward refining and perfecting the functional efficiency of the vessels. The earliest of the Boeotian trick vases appear a full generation before their Attic counterparts, and presumably are a response to Boeotian tastes for mischievous gimmickry.
