The image of the Nation of Islam (Noi) in the popular imagination is of a secret society that promulgates controversial and bizarre beliefs of racial hatred and anti-Semitism. Highly visible male figures, notably Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Louis Farrakhan, have helped shape the representation of the Noi as a radical, authoritarian, masculinist cult. Why would women willingly and actively join the Nation of Islam's strictly ordered male-centric society? And how might the Noi seem to provide opportunities for female empowerment? As the award-winning feminist historian Ula Yvette Taylor reveals in this extraordinary study, becoming a female member of the Nation of Islam has been both an act of self-preservation and an expression of black resistance. Women in the Noi seek protection, financial security, stable families, and immersion in an all-black environment. The Promise of Patriarchy peels back the layers of mystery and silence associated with the Noi to provide a riveting account of the daily lives of the group's members and the profound crises and contradictions of the organization
